About the film:

Roof Top Hip-Hop is a documentary film that will showcase some of Chicago’s up and coming Hip-Hop artists, by letting them do what they do best, in a scenic urban environment, a downtown Chicago Roof Top.  Our aim is to shed light on the lost art of freestyle rap, in the true spirit of Hip-Hop as seen by its forefathers. In addition to an avid display of talent that will be showcased in several prolonged freestyle sessions, the artists involved will get in depth in their struggles, and motivations with regard to their craft.

Throughout this documentary, we aim to raise Chicago Hip-Hop above the obscurity from which it’s trapped, by examining its strengths and weaknesses, and attempting to answer these quintessential questions:

  • How does an artist come into the Chicago Hip-Hop Scene?
  • What separates the Mainstream, and underground Hip-Hop scenes?
  • What stereotypes surround Hip-Hop as a genre?
  • Why is it more difficult to succeed as an independent artist in Hip-Hop, than in other genres?
  • What can be done to bring Chicago Hip-Hop in to the mainstream?

To answer these questions, we will observe and record nine veteran artists from Chicago’s Hip-Hop scene, through a series of open freestyle jam sessions, and in depth interviews that will shed some light on the personal struggles, and triumphs of these artists.

Roof TopShooting for Roof Top Hip-Hop began in October of 2007 with two eight hour freestyle sessions which were filmed on the roof-top sky park at 63 E. Lake St.  In the past months, shooting has continued at over a dozen locations, and has consisted mostly of interviews, and live performances.  Shooting for the film will conclude in September of 2008, with a large scale concert featuring all the artists.  This concert will provide the climax, and conclusion of the film, by showcasing the accomplishments of the artists, and the positive effect that collaboration, and cooperation can have on independent music.  Post production is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with a release date early in 2009.
